Origin Story & Hospital Summary:

Soddo Christian Hospital (SCH) was established in 2005 by the St. Luke's Health Care Foundation in association with SIM (Society for International Ministries). The hospital is located in Soddo, a city in the Wolaitta region of southern Ethiopia, about 400 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. It was founded to provide high-quality medical care to one of the most populated and impoverished areas in Ethiopia, where the majority of people live by subsistence farming.Soddo Christian Hospital is a 133-bed facility offering comprehensive medical services including general surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and emergency care. The hospital also has dedicated wards for surgical, maternity, medicine/pediatrics, and orthopedic patients. SCH is renowned for its focus on education, hosting residency programs in general surgery and other specialties through the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS).

Technology & Capacity:

SCH supports a range of medical technologies, including four operating rooms, fixed X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, and a well-equipped laboratory. The hospital performs a high volume of surgeries and provides extensive diagnostic services. Anesthesia is administered by nurse anesthetists with support from anesthesiologists, using spinal, Ketamine, and general anesthesia techniques.

Volunteers are accommodated in guesthouses or duplexes on the hospital grounds, equipped with modern amenities such as electricity, running water, water filters, refrigerators, gas and electric burners, electric ovens, and microwaves. Domestic help is available for meal preparation and cleaning. Most food items can be purchased locally in Soddo, though some specific items like butter, meat, and processed foods may need to be sourced from Addis Ababa.

Travel:

Visitors typically fly into Addis Ababa and then take an in-country flight to Arba Mintch, followed by a 90-minute drive to Soddo. The hospital logistics team assists with travel arrangements and provides orientation upon arrival.

People and Local Religion:

Soddo enjoys a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 60-65°F at night to 80-90°F during the day. The rainy season lasts from May to October, and the dry season from November to April. The high elevation of 7,400 feet ensures low humidity and intense sunlight.

Unique Challenges:

SCH addresses a range of health issues including TB, malaria, cancers, pregnancy complications, traumatic injuries, and physical deformities. The hospital also manages HIV/AIDS, though it is less prevalent in this rural area compared to urban regions. SCH provides both inpatient and outpatient care, with specialized services in ophthalmology, dentistry, and emergency care.
