Kibuye Hope Hospital (KHH) is located in the central region of Burundi, within Gitega Province, approximately 2½ hours from Bujumbura. The hospital is a mission of the Free Methodist Church of Burundi and has been operated in partnership with Hope Africa University and Serge since 2013. KHH began its significant expansion in 2013, aiming to serve the community around it and to become a regional medical center. The hospital has grown to provide specialized care and train the next generation of Burundian physicians, Kibuye Hope Hospital is a 247-bed facility that is expanding to 308 beds. It offers a wide range of medical services including general medical care, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and emergency services. The hospital performs over 1,900 major operations annually and handles more than 1,700 deliveries each year. KHH is one of the primary teaching hospitals for Hope Africa University, facilitating clinical rotations and coursework for medical and nursing students.

Technology & Capacity:

Kibuye Hope Hospital supports a comprehensive clinical laboratory, radiology department with digital X-ray and ultrasound machines, and a sophisticated surgical suite with four operating rooms. The hospital provides general anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, and regional blocks, managed by six trained Burundian anesthetists. The ophthalmology department is well-equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical tools, including retinal laser and vitrectomy capabilities.

Church and Governance:

The hospital's logistic support is provided by the Free Methodist Church and Serge, with a mission to serve the people of Burundi by providing compassionate medical care and training healthcare professionals. KHH is a testament to collaborative efforts between local and international partners in delivering quality healthcare and education.

Training Opportunities:

Kibuye Hope Hospital serves as a key teaching hospital for Hope Africa University's medical and nursing schools. It offers robust training programs for medical students, post-graduate interns, and PAACS surgery residency. Volunteer physicians are expected to participate in medical education, sharing their expertise with students and staff. The hospital also hosts an outpatient malnutrition program and a weekly pediatric specialty clinic, providing hands-on learning experiences.

Language:

French and Kirundi are the primary languages spoken at Kibuye Hope Hospital. Most medical students speak conversational English and can assist with translation.

Housing & Food:

Volunteers are housed within the hospital compound in comfortable accommodations, including houses, duplexes, apartments, and dormitories. Meals are provided cooperatively in the hospital dining room from Monday through Friday. Volunteers are responsible for their own breakfasts, dinners, and weekend meals. Arrangements can be made for meal preparation at an additional cost.

Travel:

Visitors fly to Bujumbura and then travel by road to Kibuye, a journey that takes approximately 2½ hours. The logistics coordinator at World Medical Mission assists with travel arrangements to ensure smooth transportation from the airport to the hospital.

Time Difference:

-1 hour Eastern Standard Time (EST). Burundi does not observe daylight saving time.

People and Local Religion:

Burundi is home to diverse ethnic groups, predominantly Hutu and Tutsi, with a significant portion of the population practicing Roman Catholicism. However, the local population also includes Protestant Christians and followers of indigenous beliefs.

Climate:

The hospital is located at an elevation of 6,000 feet, with temperatures ranging from 60–85 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season lasts from January to April, and the dry season extends from June to September. The high elevation negates the need for air conditioning.

Unique Challenges:

Kibuye Hope Hospital addresses a wide range of health issues prevalent in Burundi, including traumatic injuries, malaria, respiratory infections, hypertension, malnutrition, gastroenteritis, tuberculosis, meningitis, heart disease, and HIV/AIDS. The hospital's malnutrition services are particularly vital, as Burundi has one of the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in the world.
