Origin Story & Hospital Summary:

Karanda Mission Hospital, located in Mt. Darwin, Zimbabwe, was established in 1961 by The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) to address the healthcare needs of the Zambezi River valley mission stations. These stations initially focused on church planting and education before expanding to include small dispensaries and clinics. Karanda Hospital was built to support these clinics. The hospital is situated approximately 200 km north of Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe., Today, Karanda Mission Hospital is a 150-bed facility that operates at about 90% capacity. It provides a wide range of medical services, including general surgery, obstetrics, and care for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis patients. The hospital sees between 200-300 outpatients and performs 15-30 surgeries daily. The medical team includes three American and Canadian physicians, one American physician's assistant, and several local medical staff. The hospital also features a nursing school with 65 students and a primary school for the children of hospital staff.

Technology & Capacity:

Karanda Mission Hospital is equipped with fixed and portable X-ray machines, a clinical laboratory, and basic ultrasound capabilities. Pathology services include tests such as FBC, Na, K, BUN, Creatinine, AST, HepB, AFB, CSF, Stools O&P, Stool Occult Blood, Urinalysis, Pregnancy tests, HIV, CD4, Malaria (rapid and parasite slide), type and cross match, bleeding time, and C&S-basic. The hospital also has a rehabilitation technician and offers physical therapy services.

Church and Governance:

The hospital is operated by The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) and works closely with the Evangelical Church, a non-denominational church similar in doctrine to the Evangelical Free Church in the United States. The hospital employs five chaplains who provide spiritual support through daily ward devotions, evangelization, and counseling.

Training Opportunities:

Karanda Mission Hospital is affiliated with the University of Zimbabwe and provides training for surgical residents and medical students. The hospital's nursing school offers a three-year training program for around 55 students, and a one-year midwifery program. Visiting short-term volunteers are expected to participate in teaching during rounds and in the classroom.

Volunteers stay at the TEAM guesthouse in Harare for orientation and shopping before traveling to Karanda. Accommodations are provided on the hospital campus. Visitors should be prepared to manage their own meals and may need to bring water purification methods.

Travel:

Volunteers typically fly into Harare and spend one or two days at the TEAM guesthouse for orientation. They then travel approximately 200 km north to Karanda by hospital-affiliated transportation.

People and Local Religion:

The majority of the population served by Karanda Mission Hospital are rural villagers, primarily engaged in subsistence farming. Christianity is the predominant religion, with traditional beliefs still present.

Zimbabwe has three main seasons: the hot and rainy season from mid-November to mid-April, the cold and dry season from mid-April to mid-August, and the hot and dry season from mid-August to mid-November.
